Young Voices in Bloom showcases young musicians to benefit symphony outreach

May 3, 2016

MusicWorks! Asheville, an El Sistema-Inspired education program of the Asheville Symphony, is proud to offer its 2nd annual benefit concert. An evening of youthful joy awaits concert goers on May 13, 2016 as the students of MusicWorks! Asheville are joined by the Savannah Children’s Choir, the Asheville Youth Choir, and members of the Asheville Symphony Youth Orchestra. Hosts for the event will be local artist and MusicWorks! Teaching Artist, Laura Blackley and Asheville Symphony Symphonette, Charlotte Bulkeley.  The event will begin at 7:00p in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, 5 Oak Street, Asheville.

In July of 2014, MusicWorks! Asheville began at Hall Fletcher Elementary (Asheville, NC) through a generous grant from the Leever Foundation to the Asheville Symphony Orchestra. MusicWorks! is an intensive artistic and social program that uses music education as a transformative and empowering tool to teach life skills. In addition to musical instruction, the program provides free after-school care including healthy snacks, free play, and academic enrichment. Beginning with 40 students at Hall Fletcher Elementary in the 2014-15 school year, MusicWorks! currently impacts 51 students and anticipates an enrollment of 75 students for 2016-17.

Integral to the Hall Fletcher community, MusicWorks! hopes to strengthen its programming at the school with hopes to expand its reach to include students from other schools in West Asheville. A donation of $15 per concert goer is suggested, however the event is open to all who wish to attend regardless of ability to donate at this time.
