Jan. 9-Feb. 10 – New Works by Jonathan Fisher – Fisher, who earned his BFA with a concentration in printmaking at UNC Asheville in 2001, is assistant professor of art and design at Kennesaw State University. Free and open to everyone during regular library hours at UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library. Reception with the artist from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20 in the gallery. Info: library.unca.edu

Jan. 20-Feb. 17 – New Exhibition: Drawing Discourse –  UNC Asheville’s 8th annual juried international exhibition of contemporary drawing, will open in the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery in Owen Hall, with a 5 p.m. lecture and 6 p.m. reception on Jan. 20 by juror Scott Noel. Exhibition on view 9 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays through Feb. 17. Free and open to everyone. Jan. 20-Feb. 17 – New Exhibition: Sally C, Garner – Asheville-based artist Sally C. Garner, known for her crocheted installations using non-traditional fibers. She earned her BFA with a concentration in sculpture from UNC Asheville in 2014. Exhibition will be in the Owen Hall Second Floor Gallery, with viewing hours 9 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays through Feb. 17. Opening reception from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20 in the gallery. Free and open to everyone. Jan. 17 – Documentary Film: Freedom Riders – This film by Stanley Nelson and based on the book, Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice, by Raymond Arsenault, examines the role played by more than 400 black and white Americans who risked their lives challenging Jim Crow laws journeying through the South. Jan 18 – Discussion: Racial Battle Fatigue – Facilitated by UNC Asheville Assistant Professor of Sociology Megan Underhill, this discussion will examine “racial battle fatigue” – the idea that people of color experience psychological impact from the daily deflecting of racial insults, stereotypes and discrimination. Jan. 19 – Keynote Lecture by Walter Kimbrough – Walter M. Kimbrough, president of Dillard University in New Orleans, known for his writings on African-Americans and higher education, will provide the keynote address for Martin Luther King Jr. Week activities at UNC Asheville.
