Stand Against Racism free event – April 28

April 22, 2014

Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College and its partner, the YWCA, and sponsors (City of Asheville, MAHEC, and UNCA) have joined forces to host one of Asheville’s largest 2014 Stand Against Racism events on Monday, April 28, from 8:00 am until 12:30 pm in Ferguson Auditorium on the A-B Tech Asheville Campus. The goal of this year’s event is to inspire individuals and organizations to take steps over the next year to help eliminate racism.

This event will include:

  • A community progress report
  • A panel discussion moderated by Sarah Nunez and panelists will include Gene Bell, Terry Bellamy, Althea Gonzalez, Beth Maczka, and James Lee
  • Professional development opportunities, including recognizing unconscious bias, navigating social norms, best hiring practices, preparing for an interview, and much more.

The YWCA’s annual Stand Against Racism initiative brings people together to raise awreness that racism still exists and can no longer be ignored or tolerated. In Buncombe county, approximately 5,000 people and 99 organizations participate in the Stand Against Racism events.

The event is free and open to the public. Space is limited and registration is required. Public Housing residents will receive community service hours for participating.
