Southern Conference brings wrestling championships to Asheville

November 4, 2013

The Southern Conference selected Asheville as the future home of the SoCon Wrestling Championships for the 2015 – 2017 championships. The Wrestling Championships will take place in conjunction with the SoCon Basketball Championships annually on the first weekend of March at UNC Asheville’s Kimmel Arena.

“Our membership liked the idea of creating a championship weekend experience for our fans in Asheville,” said Southern Conference Commissioner John Iamarino. “This will enhance our ability to get more wrestling fans to the championship, and just as importantly will showcase the championship game of the women’s basketball tournament.”

The Southern Conference Wrestling Championships features student athletes in ten weight classes from eight educational institutions including Appalachian State, Campbell, Chattanooga, Davidson, Gardner-Webb, SIUE, The Citadel, and VMI.

“We are very excited to expand our relationships with the Southern Conference,” said Ben VanCamp, Executive Director of the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission. “This addition will  make administering both Championships easier for the SoCon staff, school administrators, and provide a better experience for the student athletes and fans.”
