RiverLink offers bus tour and kids’ earth day festival

April 12, 2016

The RiverLink Bus Tour offers answers about Asheville’s past, present and future: What is the Wilma Dykeman RiverWay Plan and what does it hold for Asheville’s future?  How did the Flood of 1916 change the river area landscape?

The next tour will be Thursday, April 21, 2016,  when the public is invited to tour the French Broad and Swannanoa Rivers with RiverLink.

This is an opportunity to see the improvements that have occurred and hear what is coming over the next several months and years to make our rivers better places to live, learn, work and play. You will learn some local history and visit some streets and neighborhoods you have never seen before.

The tour is free for RiverLink members but the tour cost for non-members is $20 per person.  Reservations are required. A final confirmation (or cancellation if needed) will be sent the week of the tour. Please go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4caea82ba1f49-2016 to reserve your seat today, email bustour@riverlink.org, or call 828-252-8474, ext. 10.

RiverLink’s Earth Day Kids’ Festival Among Best in Nation on List of 2016 Events

According to EarthDay.org, over a billion people will be celebrating Earth Day at community events, school programs, and more worldwide this year. Countless events will be held across the United States alone this April.

To celebrate Earth Day, and help homeowners become more environmentally conscious, LeafFilter North Inc. compiled a list of standout Earth Day events for 2016. This list included not only general events, but also a select few children’s events. RiverLink’s Earth Day Kid’s Festival, taking place on April 23, was named one of the best upcoming children’s events of 2016.

Earth Day events on this list were chosen for their unique offerings, like educational lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Community commitment to sustainability was another factor of particular interest to LeafFilter North, Inc. Asheville, with the help of local non-profit RiverLink, is a leader in the sustainability category, with its year-round dedication to cleaning up the French Broad River and its focus on educating younger generations who have the power to positively impact our environment for generations to come.

The celebration, located in Asheville at 144 Riverside Drive in the River Arts District (map) from 11 a.m. — 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, is one of only two North Carolina events to make the list.

RiverLink’s event will feature live birds from Wild for Life, puppies from Brother Wolf, plants from Sow True Seed & Bee Cityand recycling with Asheville GreenWorks. The goal is to introduce kids to all aspects of nature and conservation in a fun and engaging way.
The event will also feature giant puppet performers, a bounce castle, crafts from Macaroni Kids & Easel Rider, a scavenger hunt and more. Food will be available for purchase from Amazing Pizza Co. Belly Up and The Hop Ice Cream.
