In conjunction with the Economic Development Coalition for Asheville – Buncombe County (EDC), The Old Wood Company proudly announces the relocation of its Asheville facility in Woodfin to an expanded facility in the River Arts District at 99 Riverside Drive. The move will quadruple current production capacity for the Asheville-based custom furniture designer, enabling the firm to meet growing demand. Over the next three years, the firm plans to create five highly skilled new jobs in fine woodworking and metal fabrication. The Old Wood Company has been developing products and business practices rooted in sustainability since 2008. Their contemporary furniture design uses reclaimed American Chestnut and Oak, recycled steel, water and soy-based finishes, and environmentally friendly oils and waxes. Owner Darren Green explains that his commitment to sustainable practices led to the decision to redevelop a 55 year-old distribution warehouse on Riverside Drive. Investments were made in energy efficient LED lighting, formaldehyde-free insulation and a state-of-the-art spray and finish room. “It was important to find a location that reflected our interest in preservation, our corporate values of sustainability, as well as the history and heritage of our locally sourced materials. We found the perfect complement in the River Arts District.” In its short history, The Old Wood Company has designed and manufactured over 25 different collections and earned a following of national and international customers, including the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Darren adds, “One of my personal goals has been to revitalize the American furniture industry, and this company has made strides in its commitment to the art of American-made, handcrafted, custom furniture. I’m very grateful for the support of our customers.” Darren’s products have garnered both industry press and mass media coverage, including features in Furniture Today, Oprah.com, Coastal Living, Cottage Living and Ty Pennington At Home. Mayor Terry Bellamy thanked a host of community partners for their support of The Old Wood Company, including Evert Building Inc., Progress Energy, the Land of Sky Regional Brownfields Initiative and City of Asheville staff. “We are especially grateful to The Old Wood Company for choosing to invest in the redevelopment of the River Arts District. Their commitment to sustainability, to craftsmanship, and to North Carolina-made products represents the very best of our business community.” The City of Asheville, Buncombe County and the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce recently appointed members to the newly formed Asheville Area Riverfront Redevelopment Commission. The goal of the commission will be to identify opportunities for redevelopment of the region’s 17 miles of river frontage. According to David Gantt, chairman of the Buncombe County Commission, “Businesses around the country are drawn to our region for the beauty of our mountains. We congratulate Darren and his team on their success and good stewardship of our County’s natural resources.” Chairman for the EDC, K. Ray Bailey, adds, “This unique company needed a unique space. Their investment in our River District puts a stake in the ground that will inspire others to rediscover our Riverfront community as a venue where the arts, recreation and commerce can thrive.” For more information, please visit www.theoldwoodco.com.
