McHone Performance Training Helps Outdoor Athletes Stay Strong

February 26, 2025

McHone Performance Training (MPT) is redefining fitness for outdoor athletes, providing a specialized training environment designed to enhance mobility, stability, stamina, strength, and power for adventure sports. Founded by Asheville native Steven McHone, MPT caters to individuals who spend their free time trail running, mountain biking, hiking, climbing, paddling, and exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains. With a mission to help outdoor enthusiasts stay active and injury-free for a lifetime, MPT offers a range of services, including virtual coaching, semi-private group training, personal training, massage therapy, and physical therapy.

After years of working in corporate gyms, Coach McHone saw a gap in training tailored to the unique demands of outdoor recreation. His reputation as the “Outdoorsy Trainer” naturally led to the creation of MPT, where local adventurers and outdoor professionals train to optimize their performance. Whether preparing for a challenging trail race or simply staying strong enough to enjoy the mountains year-round, MPT provides the expertise and support needed to keep athletes on the trails, waterways, and rock faces as many days per year as possible.

MPT offers a premium training environment for Outdoor Athletes to train for their sport to increase the mobility, stability, stamina, strength and power for their adventures.

Founder Steven McHone has been a professional trainer and coach for over 15 years. After seeing a need for something better suited for individuals who spend a lot of their spare time in outdoor recreation activities like trail running, mountain biking, hiking, climbing, paddling and adventuring Steven stepped away from the Corporate Gym world to start MPT. Outdoor athletes deserve a better way to prepare for the demands of their sports.

Growing up in WNC Coach Steven McHone saw his communities health deteriorate as they aged and slowly give up on being active in the outdoors. MPT exists to help outdoor-centric individuals stay active with their favorite outdoor recreation activities. Our system of training was developed to keep folks on the trails, waterways and rock faces as many days per year as possible.  At MPT, we believe that a lifetime spent adventuring in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a life well lived.

How did you come up with your idea or concept for your business? How did you decide on a name?

The concept of MPT happened organically over time. Coach McHone is a native to Asheville, spending most of his early years playing in the hollers and hills of WNC. After going off to college for Sports Medicine he moved back to Asheville and began training clients at a corporate gym. Getting the niche as the “Outdoorsy Trainer” Coach McHone got most of the clients that wanted to increase their fitness specifically for their outdoor recreation pursuits.

Over time Coach McHone’s name had become well recognized in the outdoor scene surrounding Asheville, accompanied by his cofounder/wife the McHone’s set out to change the fitness landscape.

What makes your business unique in its field?

MPT specializes in working with outdoor recreation enthusiast and outdoor professionals. From weekend warriors to outdoor adventure professionals MPT knows that it takes to be prepared for the next adventure.

How many employees do you have? And what qualities do you look for when hiring?

Seven. MPT looks for individuals who are motivated by self development, collaborative with others and high awareness of self efficacy.

During your first year of business, what was the greatest lesson you learned?

Simple scales, fancy fails. My programming for workouts was too complicated and with names for classes like “Mountain Lion”. As the workouts and facility got tested I learned that the fancy names and complex workouts needed to be dialed in so that the message of who we are and what we do was clear.

Where do you see your business in the next year? The next five?

In the next year MPT seeks to make a difference in our community who has been devastated by Helene. The next five years we aim to grow out of our current space in order to buy or build our full vision for a mountain sports performance training hub in WNC.

Why did you decide to join the Chamber?

To connect with other business owners in the community and expand our network.

What is your favorite part about doing business in the Asheville area?

Over the last decade, many of my friends have also become business professionals in the Asheville area. I feel honored to share space with so many talented individuals whom I have gotten to learn and grow with as we support each other along our business odyssey.
