Asheville Community Theatre Hosts the Weekend of Wonder: On May 2-4, 2014, Asheville will host nationally and internationally known magicians for the Weekend of Wonder festival. From performances (“Wizards, Serpents, and Dragons”) to workshops and lectures, the Weekend of Wonder is a great opportunity for families to see incredible magic – and also to learn the tricks of the trade! Headliners include Jeff McBride, Maxwell Blade, Jay Scott Berry, Michael Ammar and Andrew Goldenhersh, all of whom have racked up awards and impressed audiences around the globe. Youth Production Class Presents The Little Mermaid, Jr.: In a magical kingdom fathoms below, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince Prince Eric that she’s the girl with the enchanting voice. Adapted from Disney’s 2008 Broadway production, Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr. features the hit songs “Part of Your World,” “She’s in Love,” and the Oscar-winning “Under the Sea.” This production is performed by a class of students ranging in age from 8 to 13. Performances are Friday, May 9 at 7:30 pm; Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11 at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $5.00.


Auditions for Ghosts: The Autumn Players will hold auditions for Henrik Ibsen’s Ghostson May 13, 2014 from 10:30 am – 2:30 pm.  Ghosts will be performed as reader’s theatre. Auditions are open to all in the community, no previous experience required.  All audition material is provided at the auditions. Directed by Anita Chapman.


Auditions for Driving Miss Daisy: Asheville Community Theatre will hold auditions for Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Driving Miss Daisy on May 27-28, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Auditions are open to all in the community, no previous experience required. Driving Miss Daisy is directed by Patricia Heuermann.

Storytelling series Listen to This:In the vein of “The Moth” or “This American Life,” Listen to This features stories and original songs from locals.  Performance is May 29, 2014 at 7:30 pm in 35below at Asheville Community Theatre. Hosted by Tom Chalmers. Tickets are $10.00.


The Autumn Players’ Readers Theatre Showcase Series Presents Ghosts: Henrik Ibsen’s classic social dramaraises a provocative question in this play: When a society prescribes what is allowable in our behavior, what is really achieved by following the rules?  Helene Alving, a woman who has outwardly conformed to the conventions of her time and devoted her life to keeping up appearances, finds herself haunted by the truth of the past when her artist son returns home with a mysterious illness. Directed by Anita Chapman.  Performances are Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31, 2014 in 35below at Asheville Community Theatre and Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the Reuter Center on the campus of UNCA.  All performances begin at 2:30. Tickets are $5.00 and are available at the door.
