Loving Food Resources supports special needs people in WNC

August 5, 2014

Loving Food Resources is an all volunteer, nonprofit, special-needs food pantry serving people living in WNC with HIV/AIDS and in Home Hospice care with any diagnosis.

LFR was founded in 1991 in Asheville, NC by three individuals attempting to address the food insecurity issues faced by people living with HIV/AIDS. Many were faced with the choice of purchasing their medications or their food. In 1996, LFR expanded its services to people receiving Home Hospice care regardless of diagnosis. LFR is the only food pantry in WNC addressing the issue of food insecurity for these specific populations.

LFR is open on Saturdays from 11am until 2 pm and is designed as a small grocery store allowing clients to do their own food selection. Volunteers staff the pantry to assist clients in their shopping, record box weights, offer food choices, and help in transporting clients home. LFR is a 501(c)(3), and is an all-volunteer nonprofit.

Their client population numbers approximately 200, 28% of whom are female and 33% are minorities. They are referred to LFR by personal physicians, the Western North Carolina AIDS Project, the Western North Carolina Community Health Services, and CarePartners hospice. There are no income requirements.
