As the winter weather turns colder, the Diana Wortham Theatre’s Mainstage Series is heating up, with a full schedule of events for the winter months. Though some Mainstage Series performances sell out when the season is first announced, tickets remain for some of the most anticipated performances of the 2015/2016 season, including the thundering rhythms and jaw-dropping skill of YAMATO The Drummers of Japan (Feb. 18 & 19), the groundbreaking dance theatre company Lucky Plush Productions(Feb. 26 & 27), the highly popular jazz, rock and pop outfit stephaniesĭd  (Mar. 19), and many more.

MAINSTAGE SERIES – WINTER 2016

Music Series

stephaniesĭd — Saturday, March 19, 2016, 8:00 p.m.

Voted “Crowd Favorite” at the 2015 Music Video Asheville awards, stephaniesĭd’s Mainstage Series performance is one of the biggest shows of the season, plus the evening is benefit for the theatre’s Y.E.S. Emerging Artists Fund, a new program to support young performers by providing scholarships for graduating high school seniors pursuing a career in the performing arts. Best known for its outstanding mix of songs and irresistibly infectious live performances, this incredible trio combines jazz, rock and pop to churn out wondrous and highly original tunes.

YAMATO The Drummers of Japan — Thursday & Friday, February 18 & 19, 2016, 8:00 p.m.

Yamato brings a brand new show to the Mainstage: Bakuon – Legend of the Heartbeat, complete with its trademark taiko drumming, infectious enthusiasm, and jaw-dropping skill. The drummers have delighted Asheville audiences before, in 2013, with rousing, heart-pounding feats of athleticism and musical skill.

Rhythmic Circus: Feet Don’t Fail Me Now! Thursday & Friday, March 31 & April 1, 2016, 8:00 p.m.

Groove to the beat with genre-hopping music and percussive dance highlighted by taps, shuffles and stomps and punctuated by the refrains of the seven-piece brass band, not to mention a human beat-box.

Dance Series

Koresh Dance Company: evŸoŸluŸtion — Friday & Saturday, January 22 & 23, 2016,

8:00 p.m.

The roots of human interaction are explored in the intense and intricately beautiful choreography of Koresh, a favorite among Mainstage audiences. A full week of residency activities with workshops, dance master classes, lectures and more takes place in various locations around Asheville leading up to the two public evening performances.

Lucky Plush Productions Trip the Light Fantastic: The Making of SuperStripFriday & Saturday, February 26 & 27, 2016, 8:00 p.m.

Julia Rhoads’ much-loved dance-theater company, which often takes a deceptively lighthearted approach to serious subjects, previews its groundbreaking new work in Asheville the last weekend in February. Inspired by pulp novels and comic books, artistic director Rhoads, composer Michael Caskey and video designer John Boesche explore the obstacles that contemporary do-gooders face in fighting for Truth, Justice and … Whatever. Trip the Light Fantastic promises Rhoads’ usual high-octane blend of winning performance, humor and passion.

Theatre Series

Aquila Theatre Company in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet —Saturday, February 6, 2016, 8:00 p.m.

Guided by Shakespeare’s famous prose, the timeless story of forbidden love and warring families is brought to life by the talents of the Aquila Theatre. Redirecting some of the focus to other relationships at play, a 30-foot-long gown links Juliet and Lady Capulet as they navigate the treacherous waters of arranged marriages, teenage rebellion, and all that befalls this famous household. The words remain constant, but this performance of The Bard’s tragedy takes the viewers’ breath away throughout the entire show with intense altercations and physically challenging scenes reminiscent of original Shakespearean performances.

The Cashore Marionettes — Saturday, March 5, 2016: Simple Gifts at 2:00 p.m. and Life in Motion at 8:00 p.m.

The mesmerizing work of Joseph Cashore and his marionettes walk through the many phases of life to stunning works by Beethoven, Vivaldi, Strauss and Copland in two shows, a matinee for families of all ages and an evening performance for older children and adults.

Celtic Series

Lúnasa with special guest Tim O’Brien — Sunday, February 28, 2016, 7:00 p.m.

Lúnasa joins its fresh Irish melodies with the beloved music of Appalachia in a performance with master folk and bluegrass musician Tim O’Brien.

Altan — Thursday, March 10, 2016, 8:00 p.m.

Join this traditional Irish band as it weaves an evening of jigs and reels, touching melodies, and even explores the ancient bonds between Irish music and bluegrass roots.

Dervish — Friday, March 25, 2016, 8:00 p.m.

From jam sessions at neighborhood pubs in Ireland to performing for the Chinese government, Dervish is on a mission to spread traditional Irish music to every corner with a myriad of ballads, reels and melodies.
