Costume drama: “A Fashion Show” returns to ACT

June 22, 2015

For the fourth year in a row, Asheville Community Theatre will hold their annual event Costume Drama: A Fashion Show, Asheville’s most unique fashion show. This eclectic evening of inventive fashion has quickly become one of the highlights of the Asheville event calendar and sells out every year! Local designers compete for cash prizes in this Project Runway-esque show, and proceeds from tickets benefit the theatre. Costume Drama: A Fashion Show will be held Friday, July 10 at 7:30 pm on the Mainstage of Asheville Community Theatre. Tickets are $30.00 and are available over the phone, online, or in person at the Asheville Community Theatre Box Office at 35 East Walnut St. in downtown Asheville.

Costume Drama: A Fashion Show lets the audience decide on the winners of each category. Local designers choose a themed category and create wearable art using elements from that category. This year’s design categories include two new categories “Inflatables” and “Christmas in July” as well as two past favorites “Tape” and “Nature.” Audience members choose category winners and Best in Show Design by ballot.

For the 2015 show, more designers than ever are competing. Returning designers include last year’s Best in Show winner Amanda Tucker along with each category winner. Olivia Mears won “Paper” last year and returns with entries in all four categories this year. Susan Sertain and Ida Bostian teamed up and won “Transformation” last year; this yeat, they’re each returning and between them are entering three different garments in three different categories. Aurora Moulin won the “Upcycled/Recycled” category and returns with entries in “Tape” and “Inflatables.” They are joined by other veteran designers as well as many first time entrants.

The ticket price includes a pre-show party with champagne and canapés beginning at 6:30 pm, apost-show party with desserts and a live jazz band, and a silent auction – where, among other items, selected garments from the show will be available for bids.

“I look forward to this event every year,” said Susan Harper, Executive Director at Asheville Community Theatre. “The creative talent in this community is absolutely jaw-dropping. We simply cannot believe our eyes at the innovative and incredible garments that come down the runway.”

Costume Drama: A Fashion Show is directed by Sara Fields. In addition to matching models with designers, Sara coordinates a volunteer team of local hair and make-up artists, photographers, and videographers.
