  • Eblen Charities will host its 11th annual Winter Coat Giveaway on October 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their warehouse location at 23 Hamilton Street, near Mission Hospital in Asheville. Over 3,000 winter coats and items, collected last spring through a partnership with WLOS, Carolina Furniture Concepts, and Two Men and a Truck, will be distributed free of charge to those in need.   • The WNC Nature Center is developing a permanent native pollinator garden as part of its Gateway to the Southern Appalachians project, featuring nature play areas, a planted meadow, shaded coverings, and an education kiosk. This initiative, inspired by the success of the seasonal “Beauty of Butterflies” exhibit, aims to engage guests of all ages with the beauty and importance of pollinators like butterflies, which have faced significant decline due to habitat loss and climate change. The project will include interactive elements such as a giant caterpillar and musical butterflies, promoting nature play and its numerous benefits for children’s social-emotional well-being, academic performance, and physical health. The community can support this $400,000 project, which has already raised over $250,000, through donations. Funding:

  • Dogwood Health Trust has awarded a three-year, $2.1 million grant to MANNA FoodBank to strengthen food systems in Western North Carolina. The grant will support over 100 partner agencies, eliminate transportation and storage fees for pantries, and fund the “Our Farms, Our Families” program to connect local farmers with families in need. This partnership aims to increase access to fresh, nutritious food and provide a dignified, choice-based shopping experience for more residents, especially in rural areas.

  • The City of Asheville is holding a Block Party Career Fair on Thursday, September 26, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, located at 50 Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Asheville, NC 28801.
