The WNC Nature Center in Asheville is celebrating its 100th anniversary as a wildlife park, while the Friends of the WNC Nature Center marks its 50th year of support. Originally opened in 1925, the Nature Center has transformed from a collection of exotic animals to a focus on native species of the Southern Appalachians. Despite setbacks, including closures due to storms and the COVID-19 pandemic, the center has thrived thanks to the dedication of the Friends organization. Notable milestones include a new Gateway to the Southern Appalachians project, which will be completed in summer 2025. The anniversary will be celebrated with special events, educational programs, and community outreach throughout the year. Learn more.
