  • The much-anticipated ReStore ReUse Contest is officially open for submissions at the Asheville Area Habitat ReStore. Now through September 30th, residents can show off their creativity and talent for a chance to win in the 11th annual contest. Fabulous furniture make-overs, remarkable renovations, or unique art…if you recently took on a DIY project using predominantly reused building materials, the Asheville Habitat ReStore wants to know. There are six categories this year + Best in Show, and all entries must be submitted electronically. For guidelines and entry form, visit ashevillehabitat.org/restore/reuse-contest. Past projects have included a fence fashioned from doors, a potting bench built from pallets, a camper van made of reclaimed materials, a wine bar constructed from a vintage console radio, and so much more. Happenings:

  • [title of show] runs July 15 – August 7, 2022 at Asheville Community Theatre! This laugh-out-loud musical, [title of show] is a front-row seat to the magic and mess of creativity and collaboration. Jeff and Hunter, two struggling writers, hear about a new musical theatre festival. But, the deadline for submissions is a mere three weeks away! With the help of their friends Susan, Heidi and Larry, the writers decide to write a musical about writing a musical. Directed by Mark Jones. [title of show] runs weekends July 15, 2022 through August 7, 2022 and is performed on the ACT Mainstage Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:30 pm. Opportunity:

  • Our State has launched its seventh annual Made in NC Awards! The Made in NC Awards are for North Carolina makers, bakers, crafters, and creators. Whether folks run a small microbrewery, sell handmade soaps, or create incredible custom clothing, Our State is proud of the products made right here in North Carolina — and they want to help them shine. The submission period runs through August 8, 2022, with categories for Craft, Drink, Food, Home & Garden, and Style. One winner and two honorable mentions will be selected from each category. Category winners will each receive a one-sixth page ad in the December 2022 issue of Our State magazine, email and social media promotion, inclusion in the Made in NC Awards feature stories in the February 2023 issue of Our State magazine, and an article and video on ourstate.com  Honorable mentions will be listed on ourstate.com/madeinnc  Winners and honorable mentions are invited to be vendors in the Marketplace at the Best of Our State at Pinehurst Resort January 6-8, 2023. Request for Proposals: 

  • Dogwood Health Trust has announced a new request for proposals from nonprofit organizations, government agencies, education institutions, and others who serve the Qualla Boundary and 18 counties of Western North Carolina, who seek to stabilize and grow the local Early Childhood Education (ECE) workforce to better support students in reaching success. The online application will be available on August 8, 2022 on the Dogwood Health Trust website; responses are due by 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 16, 2022. Award notifications will be made in November 2022 with funds distributed in December 2022. A special information session will be held on August 9 at noon for organizations that wish to learn more or apply. Registration for the information session can be found here.
