Announcement:

  • The Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains (formerly the Asheville Home Builders Association) recognized building industry professionals during the Annual Awards Gala on October 14, 2022. Accolades acknowledged were Parade of Homes specialty awards, WNC Stars Awards, and “Of the Year” Awards. Judges from around the country come into town to view and judge Parade Homes, while WNC Stars awards are judged by virtual submissions. Check out the winners here.

Community:

  • United Federal Credit Union’s annual United Way employee fundraising campaign set a new internal record netting $23,879 in individual pledges. The credit union added to that total with a dollar-for-dollar match bringing the total United Way donation to $47,758. Those donations will go to support 12 United Way chapters in Michigan, Arkansas, Indiana, Nevada, North Carolina, and Ohio. The 2022 employee fundraising campaign leveraged the theme “Invest in your commUNITY” and rallied employees around the greatest needs that each regional United Way chapter was facing in the six states where United is located. 

Funding:

  • The Asheville Housing Authority (AHA) and Mountain Housing Opportunities, Inc. (MHO) were awarded a new construction 9% housing tax credit development in Buncombe County. The new rental development is the first phase of the “Reimagining Deaverview” initiative and will have 82 units located at 275 Deaverview Road, Asheville, NC 28806. The three buildings will have a mix of 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom units sited upon approximately 3.1 acres. The units will be rented to families making 60% and below the area median income. Construction is expected to begin Summer 2023 and will be completed in Fall 2024. In the 2022 cycle, the North Carolina Finance Agency awarded competitive housing tax credit funding to 28 developments in 23 counties, totaling 1,716 affordable apartments.

  • Dogwood Health Trust has announced the availability of another comprehensive data assessment available to the region: an analysis of the growth capital ecosystems in Western North Carolina. The WNC Capital Landscape Assessment is the first-ever study of its kind for the region and was led by Shining Rock Ventures, a WNC-based firm that supports the success of enterprises and entrepreneurs in rural and mountain communities around the world. The full report is available for free download on Dogwood’s website. To further share and review the findings in more detail, Dogwood also will host a webinar on November 16 at 12:00 p.m. All members of the community are invited to attend and can register using this link.
  • The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Western North Carolina Chapter is celebrating National Philanthropy Day at the Crowne Plaza on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. National Philanthropy Day is a special day to recognize and pay tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy – and those active in the philanthropic community – make to our lives, communities and world.
