Internships at the Asheville Art Museum

Please send current c.v. or resume, a list of relevant courses, writing sample and letter of interest to mailbox@ashevilleart.org. While all departmental internships are unpaid, we are happy to coordinate with academic programs as needed to ensure due credit is received by student interns working at the Museum.

The following list indicates Museum departments to which prospective interns may apply at any point during the year. We are always happy to consider interns during other seasons and on a year-long basis.

Communications & Public Relations

The Communication & Public Relations department expands public awareness of the Museum and aims to increase attendance and revenue. The Department produces the Museum’s media releases; circulates images for reproduction, places advertisements, produces newsletters and other promotional materials, updates the website and conducts social media outreach. Interns will assist in producing media and updating online media and in coordinating special events. Writing sample required.

Curatorial

The Curatorial Department researches and organizes upcoming exhibitions, including the development of timelines, checklists, and signage; produces exhibition catalogues; corresponds with artists, curators, galleries and museums. Interns will be introduced to issues relating to art history and will obtain administrative and curatorial skills in organizing art exhibitions. Writing sample required.

Development

The Development department is responsible for all grants from government, foundation, and corporate sources; the membership program; contributions to the Museum; and the capital campaign for building and endowment needs. Interns will assist in researching prospective donors, program planning, membership events and grants writing.

Museum Store & Visitor Services

The Museum Store complements the Museum’s exhibition schedule by providing a stunning assortment of art related titles and objects for sale. Interns will gain experience in the day-to-day operations of a retail space, budgeting, visual merchandising, marketing, visitor services and special events.

Legal Internship

The Asheville Art Museum seeks law students for legal-based internships throughout the year.  The focus of the internship would be nonprofit corporate governance and other legal issues facing nonprofit entities. This intern would research specific projects related to Human Resources (personnel and employment compliance), non-profit management documents including By Laws (revisions), Articles of Incorporation and more. In addition, the intern would review the Museum’s corporate documents and policies. Second and third-year law students are welcome to apply. Internships are unpaid. We are currently accepting applications on a rolling basis. Please submit a cover letter and resume to mailbox@ashevilleart.org.
