Directed by Jim Reid and in partnership with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNC Asheville, these two one-act plays comprise the last of five productions of the 2014-15 season of The Autumn Players’ Readers Theatre Showcase.
The Browning Version is a searching, sensitive portrait of Andrew Crocker-Harris, a professor at an English public school. Once a brilliant scholar, he now must face the fact that his career, due to his rigid insistence on rules and regulations, has been a failure. His realization leads to a farewell address before a school assembly which is one his students will never forget.
Goodbye, Howard is a delightful comedy involving three rich and wacky Southern sisters who gather in a North Carolina hospital to keep watch over their gravely ill brother. There they meet a well-meaning youth from the backwoods who is every bit as wacky as they are. When they mistakenly come to believe that their brother has died, pandemonium breaks out.
Acting has been No. 1 on Jim Reid’s bucket list since 2004. Favorite roles include Sidney Lipton in God’s Favoriteand Robert in Proof. With The Autumn Players since 2010, he appeared in Pygmalion and The Little Foxes and directed Mary, Mary, The Lion in Winter, and Humble Boy.
The Autumn Players is ACT’s volunteer outreach group consisting of over 100 seasoned actors, directors, writers and educators dedicated to taking theatre into the community. Since 1992 the company has provided entertainment, enrichment, and instruction for thousands of students, seniors, and in-betweens at venues within an hour or more from Asheville.
