As we approach the WomanUP Awards this November, it’s time to recognize the remarkable women who have made significant contributions to our community. These nominees exemplify excellence in their fields, from trailblazing entrepreneurs to impactful nonprofit leaders.

Public vote will be combine with WomanUP committee review of nominations to select our award winners.

Woman Executive of the Year: Sponsored by Realty ONE Group Pivot

  • Alba Telez – HR and Marketing Manager at Green Sage Cafe, Alba Telez has made a major impact on the company. Her kind, respectful, and accepting leadership has been instrumental in creating a positive workplace culture and enhancing the cafe’s brand in the community. Her initiatives have increased employee morale and retention, supported staff professional development, and championed diversity.
  • Amy Michaelson Kelly – Managing Principal at Hatteras Sky, Amy Michaelson Kelly has transitioned from a successful career in law to making significant contributions to Asheville’s hospitality industry including The Radical, Zelda Dearest, and Blind Tiger Asheville, upcoming hotel Zelda Salon, Phil Mechanic Studios, Table Restaurant, and various buildings on Broadway and Lexington. Amy also serves on the inaugural LIFT Committee for Explore Asheville. Amy is passionate about celebrating the history of Asheville’s landmarks, highlighting local artists, and providing opportunities for their involvement in her projects leading to Zelda Dearest being named a finalist for an international design award. In renovating the Phil Mechanic Studios, Amy and her partner updated the property while maintaining its use as artist studios. Under Amy’s leadership, the local hotels support many community groups, including the River Arts District Artists Association, Black Wall Street, River Link, Blue Ridge Pride, Power of Women, and the Mosaic Art Walk.
  • April Brown – Asheville Market Executive at Bank of America, April Brown demonstrates exceptional leadership by driving innovation and fostering a culture of excellence. Her commitment to empowering women in the finance sector is evident through her active mentorship and support of other women professionals. April has served on several nonprofit boards, currently the Co-Chair for her son’s independent school board and Vice President for OnTrack WNC. April is a dedicated volunteer in her community and 1 of 5 teammates in the Asheville Market selected to receive the 2023 President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA), which recognizes individuals for positively impacting communities through 200 hours or more of volunteer service.
  • Beth Poslusny – Vice President of Destination Guest Experience at Biltmore, Beth Poslusny is a leader in creating exceptional guest experiences. Her innovative approach to hospitality has enhanced the Biltmore brand and its reputation as a premier destination. Beth is dedicated to fostering growth within her team and ensuring that visitors to Asheville have memorable experiences. When she’s not at work, she is still serving others, for example, she is a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
  • Charlotte Stack – Over 13 years, Charlotte Stack has risen from food runner to Chief Operating Officer at Chai Pani Restaurant Group (CPRG),– along the way critically supporting the company’s rapid growth. She mentors the 22-person executive team and corporate office and leads monthly staff development seminars across CPRG’s five restaurants. She is an AIR board member and spearheads CPRG’s give-back initiatives benefitting local and international organizations. Charlotte is also working with a small team to launch a mental health ambassador program for local hospitality professionals.
  • Dr. Jennifer Reed – As Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction at Buncombe County Schools, Dr. Jennifer Reed plays a crucial role in shaping the educational landscape and preparing students for future success through professional guidance and community partnerships. She serves on the boards of YMCA of WNC and United Way. She has also been an advocate for partnerships between the business community and the school system, advancing opportunities for workforce development. For example, she helped launch the new Buncombe County Center for Career Innovation, linking businesses with the school system in creating student internships that lead directly to employment following graduation.
  • Kristi Shrum – CEO and Co-Owner of Insurance Service of Asheville (ISA, Kristi has helped lead the 65-year-old business into a new era, demonstrating strong leadership, problem-solving and mentoring and leading the company to record growth in 2023. Starting as an entry level sales rep and ascending into managerial roles, Kristi has always been one to take initiative and move things forward while bringing uncommon grace and empathy to coworker and client interactions. In addition, she has volunteered significantly with United Way, Homeward Bound, The Asheville Chamber, Haw Creek Elementary, ABYSA (coach), Brother Wolf and other organizations and served on the Board of Directors for Meals On Wheels and the NC Craft Beverage Museum. 
  • Laura Baker-Seseika – Marketing Director at McGuire Wood & Bissette Law Firm, Laura Baker-Seseika is recognized for her strategic marketing expertise and her ability to elevate the firm’s presence in the community. Her leadership in the marketing field has significantly contributed to the firm’s success and its engagement with the Asheville community. Laura, an advocate for the elderly and former program development manager for PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly), continues to serve the community by serving on the board at MountainCare. Laura is also a 2024 graduate of Leadership Asheville.
  • Dr. Laurie Zone-Smith – As Division Vice President of Clinical Education at Mission Health, Dr. Laurie Zone-Smith is dedicated to fostering professional development and improving nursing practice. Over 37 years, she has demonstrated commitment to her profession through skill development and collaborative research projects. She instructs and mentors students completing honors research coursework, master’s level practicum, doctoral capstone projects, and residency programs in administration and mentors nurses who are pursuing advanced degrees, challenging them to stretch critical thinking and apply leadership skills.
  • Maggie Carnevale, AIA – Serving as Principal, Asheville Office Leader, Vice President at LS3P, architect Maggie Carnevale is known for her collaborative leadership and community engagement. As a mentor, she provides opportunities for students to shadow and intern at her office, offering them invaluable insights into the architectural profession. Under her leadership, the Asheville office has engaged in various charitable outreach efforts, including pro-bono design work for local organizations. One example is the Art in the Heart Podium design for the city of Asheville.
  • Mary Michael – A Business Coach at Action Coach, Mary Michael supports clients’ professional and personal growth. With 25+ years of experience in people and operations management, she has consistently excelled by focusing on the heart of every organization—its people. She is devoted to guiding women entrepreneurs through the challenging early stages of business ownership and empowering women to build and advance their careers. Mary is also a founding member and former president of Rotary Club of Asheville South.
  • Megan Carroll – Executive Officer at the Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Megan Carroll is a dynamic leader who has significantly contributed to the growth and development of the local building industry. Her strategic vision and dedication to community engagement have strengthened the association’s impact in the region. Under Megan’s leadership, the Builders Association has increased its involvement in community outreach programs, fostering stronger relationships with local communities and addressing their needs more effectively. One of her most notable contributions has been her partnership with BeLoved Asheville, supporting housing initiatives that address homelessness and poverty. Megan is also nominated for Outstanding Woman Nonprofit Leader & the Impact Award.
  • Rebekah Schram – As Operations Manager at American IRA, Rebekah Schram leads with resilience and a passion for fostering growth within her team. Rebekah fosters an environment where everyone, especially women, feel supported, respected, and empowered to succeed. Known for her ability to create a supportive environment, Rebekah provides mentorship, encourages professional development, and ensures operational success. She has successfully implemented new policies and procedures that have led to remarkable business growth.
  • Dr. Shantelle R. Simpson – Chief Executive Officer & President at Appalachian Mountain Health, Dr. Shantelle R. Simpson is a visionary leader dedicated to improving healthcare outcomes. She has expanded access to affordable medical, dental, and behavioral health care across WNC. Under her leadership, the organization has doubled staff, completed a renovation of a new larger facility, relocated the Sylva clinic to a larger space, started both mobile medical and dental clinics for the community, opened a new school-based health center within Asheville High School, completed construction on a new building in Murphy tripling capacity, and opened a new dental clinic in Asheville.

  • Dr. Elisabeth Brooks – Founder of Everyday Orthodontics, Dr. Elisabeth Brooks’s dedication to orthodontics is not just about creating beautiful smiles but also about enhancing her patient’s overall well-being and self-confidence. She created a patient-centered practice where patient care goes beyond conventional treatments, ensuring that every patient feels understood, valued, and comfortable throughout their orthodontic journey.   • Jeanne Sommer – President of Hidden River Events, Jeanne Sommer transformed a casual idea into a thriving business that has served thousands of couples over the past 16 years. Through dedication, hard work, and a commitment to sustainability and agritourism, Jeanne has expanded her business, paid off significant real estate debt, and established a successful floral business on-site. She offers all-inclusive wedding packages with upfront pricing aimed at providing stress-free celebrations. In honor of her Sweet 16 business anniversary, Jeanne created a fund at the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina supporting women and girls affected by domestic and gun violence, and a portion of the cost of each wedding goes yearly to this fund.
  • Maja Potocki – Co-founder of Carolina Outdoor Lighting, Maja Potocki established the business in 2017 with her husband to fill a niche market in Western North Carolina. Maja’s vision was to create a specialized landscape lighting service that enhances the beauty and functionality of outdoor spaces. Her entrepreneurial journey is characterized by her willingness to take risks, her relentless drive for excellence, and her dedication to professional development. Under her leadership, the company has quickly become a respected name in the industry and is known for its exceptional quality, innovative designs, and customer-centered approach.
  • Paula Kelley – As founder and owner of NC Guardian and Care Management (NCGCM), Paula Kelley is a healthcare advocate, addressing a specific need within the WNC community, providing supportive care services for aging populations or individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities who are often targeted for financial gain. Paula builds a supportive and collaborative network that can fill in those gaps that family and friends cannot provide. Her strong focus on relationship-building enables her team to continue to follow individuals’ wishes should they come to need guardianship support. Paula is one of only seven nationally certified guardians in NC in a region with 44% more people over 65 than the rest of the state.
  • Skip Fellers – The Salon Owner/Hairstylist at Neon Moon Salon, Skip Fellers has successfully built a unique and vibrant space that goes beyond the typical salon experience. Her ability to combine creativity with business savvy has allowed Neon Moon Salon to grow rapidly, attracting a loyal clientele. Skip’s vision for her business reflects her entrepreneurial spirit and her commitment to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. Skip holds classes, mentors other business owners and stylists, and has established a network of stylists throughout the country so she can refer social media followers to trusted stylists in their areas.
  • Tanya Fletcher – President/Owner of Sterling Transitions – Downsizing & Auction Services, Tanya Fletcher recognized a need in the market for downsizing and estate transition services and turned that insight into a successful business with business partner Betty Baker. Her company has grown from a local operation to serving multiple locations, reflecting her ability to scale her business while maintaining high standards of service. Tanya’s entrepreneurial journey is a testament to her foresight and dedication.   • Alesia Summey – Director of Early Childhood Education at YWCA of Asheville, Alesia Summey has significantly impacted the organization by embracing and leading strategic changes over her 22-year tenure in early childhood education. Alesia has introduced innovative practices and led the flexible, low-cost Empowerment Child Care program to be a resource at the Family Justice Center. Her graceful and caring leadership has consistently benefited the staff, the board, and the wider community by ensuring high-quality care for every child and support for family members, focused on mission-driven childcare services. Beyond her work at the YWCA, Alesia also serves as a community connector for MANNA FoodBank’s Community Market program, bringing their mobile pantry to neighborhoods where food access is limited.
  • Alicia Heacock and Meagan Lyon Leimena – Alicia and Meagan are the Co-Executive Directors of Babies Need Bottoms, Western North Carolina’s only diaper bank. Under their leadership, the organization has become a vital resource, expanding access to basic hygiene essentials for thousands of families across 16 counties. Driven by their experiences as mothers, Alicia and Meagan are dedicated to improving the community for other families, particularly by addressing the often-overlooked necessity of diaper access.
  • Amanda Bryant – As the Executive Director of the Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS), Amanda Bryant has significantly impacted the organization by promoting STEM education and community engagement. Under her leadership, AMOS led the development of a local STEM Ecosystem, a collaborative of nonprofits, academia, science, and local industry business leaders in Buncombe County. One outcome of the collaborative is professional development support and STEM inclusion experiences for K-12 teachers. Amanda recently established a Women in STEM local chapter, which fosters growth and development among young women interested in science.
  • Amanda Garcia – A Service Unit Specialist and Troop Leader for Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont (GSCP2P), Amanda Garcia has shown exceptional leadership by fostering growth within the organization. She is deeply committed to the development of girls and volunteers alike, ensuring that everyone involved in the Girl Scouts program has the tools and support they need to succeed. Through her many roles, Amanda organizes fun and engaging activities and events for girls in her service unit, supports new adult leaders and is an advocate of the Girl Scout Movement for members, volunteers and the broader communities of Buncombe County and beyond.
  • Amy Upham – Executive Director of Blue Ridge Pride, Amy Upham has grown the organization’s impact and community engagement, including mental health services and Welcoming Spaces training for businesses. She also began several community Advisory committees, including the Festival Advisory Committee, LGBTQIA+ Health Equity Survey Committee and LGBTQIA+ Mental Health Committee. She secured funding to author, analyze and report on over 100 health and social determinant of health metrics for the WNC LGBTQIA+ community – the first report of its kind for our region. Both personally and professionally, Amy has been dedicated to helping people – serving as a mentor, connector, advocate, nonprofit consultant and innovator.
  • Cheryl Wallen – Director of Givens LifeMinistries, Cheryl Wallen embodies Givens wellness philosophy and is committed to whole-person health – for residents and people throughout the community. Through Givens’ LifeMinistries outreach endeavors, she actively addresses health disparities of underserved, diverse and vulnerable populations by providing access and connections to resources that promote independence and improve quality of life while helping people age successfully in their homes and communities. Cheryl works tirelessly through LifeMinistries to reach approximately 10,000 people each year in twelve counties through outreach programs that address social determinants of health. Her initiatives address food insecurity, social isolation and spiritual wellness; help provide basic needs like diapers and clothing for families with young children; and provide access to medical equipment to uninsured and underinsured individuals.
  • Christian Grunder – Vice President of Human Resources of Givens Communities, Christian Grunder demonstrates exemplary leadership and a visionary approach to her responsibilities. Her journey from the Programming Department, where she began her career 15 years ago, to her current role is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and exceptional capabilities. Serving as a dynamic member of the Givens Communities Leadership Team, she has been instrumental in shaping the organization’s overall strategy, fostering growth initiatives and influencing cultural dynamics. Her innovative ideas and collaborative spirit have enriched discussions and decision-making processes across all facets of Givens Communities. Her passion for excellence, coupled with her genuine care for the well-being of Asheville seniors and the professionals who serve them, sets her apart as a true leader and innovator in the Asheville senior living field.   • Elizabeth Williams – Executive Director of MountainCare and Council on Aging of Henderson County, Elizabeth Williams is dedicated to serving the needs of our elderly citizens. She has demonstrated exceptional leadership, guiding the organization through its transition to an independent nonprofit. Under her guidance, MountainCare established crucial infrastructure, increased staff pay and secured a new location. She also spearheaded strategic planning, fostering organizational health and creating performance dashboards. Her advocacy extends beyond MountainCare, promoting collaborative efforts to improve aging services in Buncombe County. Elizabeth’s commitment to empowering staff, enhancing community partnerships, and ensuring high-quality, essential care for older adults has been instrumental in the organization’s success and sustainability.
  • Jaclyn “Jackie” Kiger – Recently named Executive Director of Pisgah Legal Services, Jaclyn Kiger has been instrumental in expanding access to justice for low-income individuals and families in Western North Carolina through her 14 years with the organization. Her efforts have strengthened the organization’s ability to serve the community and ensure that vulnerable populations receive the legal assistance they need to improve their lives. She was instrumental in launching the organization’s Health Justice program (helping people access quality affordable insurance), advocating for the expansion of Medicaid, creating a new anti-poverty program that has helped residents secure more than $26.46 million in monetary benefits like tax refund dollars, championed the addition of a team of social workers and helped secure a new $1.4 million Duke Endowment Grant to help children avoid foster care and stay safely in their homes.
  • Jessica Hendrix – As Vice President of Operations at YMCA of Western North Carolina, Jessica Hendrix has played a crucial role in the organization’s response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a comprehensive supervisor training program that promotes mental health and builds resilient, sustainable teams. Jessica’s leadership and commitment to the community have helped the YMCA continue its mission of service and outreach. She oversaw initiatives that delivered more healthy living opportunities and access to healthy food for community members. Her direct and honest style coupled with openness to learning inspires other women in the organization as well as Junior League. She also serves on the board of the Asheville Downtown Association and on the Children’s Welfare League.
  • Julia Costa – Director of Community Health at YMCA of WNC, Julia Costa has led the nutrition program to exponential growth – from an initial few boxes of food each week to serving families across Buncombe and beyond. She’s led a team to solve the problem of food insecurity for neighbors in need. With a contagious work ethic, she jumps in without hesitation for the hard work of unloading trucks, even when her primary responsibilities are coordinating and creating the vision for growth. As a logistical expert, Julia shares her expertise with her team, and her “lead by example” attitude inspires those around her to perform at their best.
  • Lorie Boehm – Regional Director for the Arc of Buncombe County, Lorie Boehm has been a relentless and dedicated professional for intellectual or developmental disability services in Western North Carolina and played a crucial role in positioning the Arc of NC as a cornerstone of disability services. Over the years, she has overseen the transition from institution-based care to community-centered supports, advocating for person-centered planning and inclusive opportunities. Recent Medicaid expansion in NC enabled the introduction of new programs and services to those who had previously not been eligible, ensuring comprehensive support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and reinforcing Lorie’s ongoing commitment to improving quality of life and access to resources for this vulnerable population.
  • Rachel Sossoman – CEO of Mercy Urgent Care, Rachel Sossoman has led the organization with a focus on unleashing the potential in others. Her passion for healthcare and community service has driven significant improvements within the organization, including implementing a staff development training system, broadening services offered to the community and providing access to healthcare for area families in need. Rachel was named a 2022 NC trailblazer by Business North Carolina for her contributions to the healthcare industry. She also serves on the board of the Asheville Chamber and the Asheville Symphony and is a member of the Western North Carolina University Master of Science and HR advisory board.
  • Rhonda Devan – CEO/CFO of Devan Consulting, Rhonda Devan has 30+ years of experience in accounting, auditing, and CFO roles, leading nonprofits and businesses towards growth and success. Rhonda is passionate about helping nonprofits and empowering women to make a lasting impact on their communities through financial and accounting solutions. Rhonda has served as a treasurer on various nonprofit boards in the Asheville area, including Bounty & Soul. She is also involved with nonprofit boards at Vecinos, Inc. and Carolina Cyber Center through Devan Consulting.
  • Tia Ramsey – A Service Unit Specialist and Service Unit Adult Learning Facilitator for Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont (GSCP2P), Tia Ramsey has distinguished herself through her commitment to empowering young girls and fostering leadership skills. Tia was a Girl Scout for 11 years and has been a volunteer with GSCP2P for 37 years. Tia plays a vital role in mentoring and supporting volunteers within the Girl Scouts organization, demonstrating her dedication to the community and the growth of future leaders.
  • Tricia Chan – Program Director of French Broad River Academy Girls Program, Tricia Chan’s strong leadership skills coupled with her tireless work ethic have produced exceptional growth. She acts with intention and purpose to ensure that her students, staff and stakeholders are receiving the greatest opportunities to grow and shine. By diligently reorganizing processes, she has increased efficiency, improved communication and created more capacity for collaboration. Tricia is also responsible for overseeing over 735 hours of school service work during the 2023-24 school year. By partnering with local non-profits like RiverLink, Mountain True, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and MANNA Foodbank, Tricia and her students and staff are making a significant impact on the health of our rivers and forests while instilling a habit of service unto others.
  • Zurilma Anuel – Director of the Western Women’s Business Center, Zurilma Anuel is an outstanding leader and mentor for her team members and entrepreneurial clients. She has increased revenues and resource partners, enabling the organization to serve more women entrepreneurs. Under Zuri’s leadership, the organization has exceeded goals for coaching provided to female entrepreneurs as well as their access to capital. She also volunteers with organizations that serve the Asheville area community, serving on the Invest Appalachia Board and providing advice on initiatives carried out by the City of Asheville, Buncombe County, Dogwood Health Trust and Appalachian Community Capital. Zuri and her family have also started a non-profit, Relief Box, to provide humanitarian aid to families in her native Venezuela.

Rising Star Award: Sponsored by Western Carolina University

  • Claire Southerland – Project Engineering Manager at Eaton, Claire Southerland has quickly risen within her organization, demonstrating technical expertise, leadership and willingness to take on responsibilities outside her role. She is a leader for activism at Eaton Asheville, supporting staff fundraising for local nonprofits that exceeded goals. She has managed a team of recent college graduates who are a part of Eaton’s Leadership Development Program, prepared new employees for suture roles and is the local lead for the organization’s cross generational collaboration group.
  • Gwendolyn Dare Hageman – Founder and Owner of Darë Vegan Cheese, Gwendolyn Dare Hageman has turned her passion for plant-based food into a successful business that has quickly gained a loyal following in Asheville. A graduate of UNC-Asheville, Gwendolyn has partnered with local businesses and organizations to promote sustainable practices and healthy living. What started out in the basement of an existing business has transformed into a business that now operates in a 6,000 sq ft space and that will reach seven figures in revenue this year. Her products are in 46 Whole Foods stores, 46 independent stores, multiple restaurants in the Southeast and a grow direct-to-consumer presence.
