What are clusters?

Industry "clusters" are geographic concentrations of interconnected companies and institutions in a particular field.

"Clusters" also include the institutions & professional organizations that provide research assistance and support to the industry.

The Economic Development Coalition for Asheville-Buncombe County sets its sights on five target clusters

The cluster-based strategy is based on identifying and targeting specific industries that are high-growth and high-potential sectors.  Each of the five clusters was carefully chosen for its competitive advantages, as well as the potential to support significant job growth in the region.  Clusters often represent a natural fit and are assets in the community.
The Asheville area’s professional organizations, research and development, top tier colleges and universities, and talented workforce amplify the success of these established industry clusters and elevate their ability to compete nationally and internationally.
